Trapped in a book
Sep. 25th, 2003 09:15 pmOk, have you ever hit a point in a book where you knew, absolutely knew, come hell or high water, that you had to read that book, and only that book, until you could finish it?
I'm currently reading "The Future War", by SM Stirling. I read the previously two books, which are all a continuation of Terminator 2, and greatly enjoyed them. I've talked to a few people who saw Terminator 3, and mentioned that these books were better..I've not seen the movie yet, as I still have Infiltrator fresh in mind, and don't want it sullied yet.
The books take place years after T2...and, in Infiltrator, you meet a new type of Terminator, sent back, NOT to kill John Connor, but to ensure that Skynet exists. If it can get Connor, that's a bonus. :-)
Well, after shuddering at the end of the last book, I'm now three chapters into "The Future War", and just closed it, as I can tell that once I pick it up again, I'll be reading it..for a good long while.
THIS is how the movie sequels should be done...should HAVE been done, now that T3 exists...much as the Aliens story, by Verheiden and Nelson, done by Dark Horse in Black and White years ago, SHOULD have been what Alien 3 was...or, a step further, what the Zahn books for Star Wars should have been, s'far as Sequels. I'm finding the Stirling books rivetting...and the Stirling books even touch on Paradox a little...which is kinda cool.
In short, I'm three chapters into the book, and raving...I can't wait to see what the rest of the book looks like.
On a side note, in 10 minutes, "Coupling" will premiere on NBC...this is what will, in the Network's eyes, replace Friends when it goes off the air this year....LONG overdue. However, I fully expect Coupling to be bastardized...it is a "reimagining" of a BBC series that is VERy well done, and well, we can't adapt BBC to American very well...one need only look at the plotline of the AMERICAN version of "Ultraviolet" to see that...and, that show never made it to air, fortunately. The BBC Ultraviolet, however, is a thing to watch...VERY good take on Vampires...even if Vampires aren't your bag. :-)
