So, do I take the Job that, for right now, feels hit or miss...the travel the country doing site surveys and installs and all that, or do I take the job at Anthem that makes me just a little more than at my previous job, and sets me up until March?

Decisions, Decisions...

And no, no benefits...if I want, since I'd be going through my recruiters, I could pay an amount a week, and get some benefits...but no, they don't come with the job.

Pros on travel? They cover the travel costs...the rental car...in theory, I won't have to use my cell phone again like I had to overuse it two days ago...and, I get to see more of the country that I've been wanting to see.

Cons? Travelling/driving to the sites...I get lost too easily. Having to live a schedule of getting up, getting on a plane, going where they want me to..and, I'm only paid when I'm onsite...much like this week..I got paid for all 13 hours on Wednesday...Thursday? Nope...I am getting a per diem for food for Tuesday night, though...

Pros with Anthem? Helpdesk...answering phone support questions. Local. still around friends and family.

Cons? Slightly less than the Travel Job pays (which I'm pretty sure I'd be ok with...considering the travel job isn't enough more to make me consider it over a local)...phone environment, so less actual interaction with the people I'm supporting...

Hmmm...

And I feel sorry for anyone else trying to decipher that. :-P

Per... considering you stated that with the travel job, you only get paid when you're on site, this means that there is more than likely more time you're off site than on site. Thus, the extra money you're making on that job really washes out because of the hours you work vs. hours you don't work. With the Anthem job, you're guarenteed the money. Personally, if it was me, I would go with the sure thing... but then again, I've always been a conservative type of person when it comes to money.

*nod* Well, given the fact that I'm needing to make sure I have a steady enough job to justify living in the Apt. for longer, yeah, kinda the conclusion I've come to. But, it did bear thought...they REALLY seem to want me for this travel job...

Of course, that brings in the "Well, if I state I don't want this one, how much are they REALLY going to help me find the other"...I hate not trusting like that.

The problem is you can't - but be happy anyway.

The problem with that arguement is what myself has been in for sometime. Before the meltdown back in 2000. (that is another story). The main reason they want you is because after doing it for awhile - one of two things happens.. you get board of it and decide that something (anything) got to be better than living out of a McD's bag. Or the second is that you get the job you really want and just toss them.

We had this tech go to work for NCR, he was a traveling tech with what he thought was a cool job - until he found out his region of operation.. WV, Ohio, Mi, in Ky. That is a lot of travel even in a company car. He eventually came back to do his old tech job at Omcast.

Guess what I trying to say - Oppurtunities are there, but maybe not in the 'field' you think. I never thought would be working with telephone - that was my ex's job.. well guess what - I am working telephone, almost wanted to call her the other day to get a brief understanding of how LEC's and DN's and trunking really worked... but I got my sanity back.

The Anthem gig will be probably until after the filling rush - always a big time end of the year - used to process insurance claims (an that too is another story).

But it might offer you time to work on things here at home - like the school thing.. or give you a bit of a breather to land another job that you will totally adore.

As long as you tell them that you cannot take the position because you have other obligations here in Indianapolis (such as you were just accepted to go back to school), they'll understand. Bear just got a call the other day stating that with his qualifications, once he has his degree, they'll have *NO* problem getting him what he wants in the job market. The companies are more than willing to work with you if something comes up that they feel they can place you in.

Thanks. :-) Scary scary...and I'm trying to do less of the angst thing over the jobs...worrying about finding "The Job" isn't gonna help me.

Then again, I may be the sad sack of blubbering come March, when Contract Ends. Hopefully, by that point, school will have given me a bit of where things are going to go.

And then on the third hand..:-P It could be that school will drive me insane on whole new levels...

All jobs are not equal. It's the recruiter's job to find one that suits you, not just any old job. I know; my father ran a recruiting business for a while. They'll go find you another one b/c they want the fee.

I'd be pretty leery about a long-term position with all that travel. It's hard to maintain a social life or any kind of routine, including eating or exercise habits. A temp position through March could be pretty good. That kind of position often leads to extensions if you do well. Then again, I think you're really best for face-to-face support, so I'm still hoping something like that falls your way.

I AM best at Face to Face support, but no one wants that anymore. Or at least, not that I've seen anywhere...and I've pimped the hell out of myself for that.

It's almost like a deity is standing over me with a cricket bat saying "Come on, GET THE CLUE ALREADY". :-) And I don't know if it's that I'm too stubborn, or too stupid...or a big bit of both.

Recruiters are supposed to find you a good match...however, anymore, with the state of the tech market, they can be picky, and try to put good people in places that they want...and not necessarily where the techs want to be. I'm not having a whole lot of faith...so, that drives me a little nutty. Still, could be worse (As I shudder at my own phrase).
