And lo and behold, the issue is actually with the DVD writer. I wondered if I had an issue with one, but yeah, the primary is definitely hosed.

Thanks to a recommendation, I have a VERY dependable, known Samsung drive now (reviews were good, too), which can actually have the firmware updated (as opposed to my other drive), and have already burned a good disc, no coaster. :-)

So, some of my Christmas stuff continues now.
