Ok. Here at CNN, we have a wonderful article that talks about passports, and the new passport regulations that are going into effect.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/TRAVEL/01/23/new.passport.rules.ap/index.html
Not really a big pain, I knew I'd need a passport (for going back to Canada sometime, and for the class stuff), hence why I've gone ahead and started the process of getting mine.
However, one part of the article sticks out in my mind.
"The only valid substitutes for a passport will be a NEXUS Air card, used by some American and Canadian frequent fliers; identification as a U.S. Coast Guard merchant mariner; and the green card carried by legal permanent residents. Active members of the U.S. military are exempt."
So, Green Cards are able to be taken, in the place of a passport?
The whole idea is for security, right? So, instead of making this passport rule APPLY TO ALL, we're making exceptions for Frequent Fliers, "permanent" legal residents, and Active US Military.
I see no way for any of those three groups to be faked, or provide a security risk, or cause of abuse. *eyeroll*
Am I crazy? For thinking this is insane, not for any other valid reason I may actually be crazy for.

Date: 2007-01-23 09:46 pm (UTC)I guess it depends on whether legal residents can get passports. If they can't, it seems more rational to put in place a process by which they can obtain them or something equivalently secure -- like a government-issued ID instead of a driver's license for non-drivers.
