Ok, so I decided to just go ahead and see "Stardust" tonight. Tried to see if anyone else was able/interested in going, and came up snake eyes on that one. It happens, it was a last minute decision, based on the fact that freebies would get me in. :-)

Trailers. Wow...there are a few that look REALLY good. Golden Compass, which I'd seen before, still has my curiosity. Spiderwick. Wow! That looks great...I need to make time. And, one I hadn't seen before, for "Across the Universe", which looks like Moulin Rouge, adding Beatles songs. 0.o

Then, the movie. First, I tried reading Stardust many, MANY years ago. And didn't make it very far. I will now make a new effort. The movie was fabulous. I think it's dislodged many movies that fill that vein..of which the only one I can immediately think of is "Princess Bride". Great story, good action sequences, a few surprises for me, who is rarely surprised by movies anymore..great casting, particularly Pfeiffer (WOW), Claire Danes (Whom I agree with Mobobocita about..another wow), and DeNiro. But, another bit that was great was the casting of the 7 princes...of whom Mark Strong, playing Septimus, was a standout. He looked VERY familiar in the film, and I'm sad to say I don't recognize other movies he has done. But, the other brothers were amusing, as well, as a sort of Greek Choir.

There was a quote..

"You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn't true. I know a lot about love. I've seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate... It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves... You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, and... What I'm trying to say, Tristan is... I think I love you. Is this love, Tristan? I never imagined I'd know it for myself. My heart... It feels like my chest can barely contain it. Like it's trying to escape because it doesn't belong to me any more. It belongs to you. And if you wanted it, I'd wish for nothing in exchange - no fits. No goods. No demonstrations of devotion. Nothing but knowing you loved me too. Just your heart, in exchange for mine. "

GO SEE IT!

And, if you've seen it and liked it? Might I also highly recommend "MirrorMask", also written by Neil Gaiman. I own the movie, and yet have only watched it once. I'll watch it again, eventually, but if you liked Stardust, and like Labyrinth, I've a feeling you will also adore Mirrormask. Call it a hunch. I would also say, if you've not seen Stardust yet? Try to see it before it exits the theaters. I don't think you'll be disappointed, and the big screen adds a bit to it.

To all who told me I should go see it? Yup, you were right. Blew my expectations out of the water, raised my spirits a tad, and is one I'll own. Thank you.

You should read the comic version with the art by Charles Vess.

MirrorMask and Labyrinth! Also excellent movies! I agree with your correlation between Stardust and Princess Bride.

my favorite line is still 'yes because nothing says i love you like a kidnapped, injured woman.'

awesome movie and yes i do adore mirrormask as well. should read the book...really should read the book, need to read most of gaiman though as i'm sorely lacking in good comic experiences.

I thought the ghosts were....well.... very "Python-ish" too. But Deniro stole some scenes, he did.
