So, got a nice 200G drive a while ago...and, just now, was going to format it, since it's faster, make it my primary drive, and the nice 80G becomes a music drive..

Formatted, installed, all nice software...did it smart, still kept the other drive live so I could take my time..

Hmmm...112 G of free space? That can't be right...

Yes, the drive is only seeing about 128G of it's 200 capacity.

Have attempted the upgrades of software..no, my motherboard is the problem.

FEH.

So, have the old drive hooked up while I research, and try to figure out what to do...getting a new M/B is not an option...because, when you upgrade the M/B, you may as well upgrade memory and processor while you're at it.

*sigh* Ah well...will see if I can make the 80 do what I'm trying to do. More for future...and, once I have a job, I can think of things like Computer Upgrades.

Ran into a guy I used to work with today...good to touch base (He hadn't worked at the company in a while), and we both had a good laugh. :-)

Hey there, I have a 160 gb, and it only sees 148 - because of windows system files (the ones that you don't see on the hard drive, boot strap area and all that jazz). There is also a change to the registery you need to make that is for LDA, or something like that - Large drive access. It is disabled in windows so you have to edit it, or even add it to your registery.

If the BIOS only sees less than the total amount, have you checked to make sure you have the latest bios on the motherboard?

Another question - is it EIDE or SATA, or can you exchange it for a sata drive. I have a controller for the SATA from Adaptec that is fast, PCI controller - has two spots for drives.

Catch me sometime if you like.

Okay - here is what I was trying to say.

Okay, that did not go the way I thought.

The problem is windows XP will only address/see the first 137gb of the drive, by default. So by your calculations - that is exactly what you are showing.

Here is the knowledge base article from Microsoft.

Hope this helps out. :)
