Anyone know anything about "French Lick, Indiana"?

Mom just sent me a few things that are...um, interesting to say the least. ANd has my curiousity raised.

I stayed there for a weekend at the 'resort' way back in high school for the statewide Key Club convention. What did you want to know?

Weelll...it is about 2 hours south of Bloomington. It is very small. Very woodsy area...it is pretty much in the Hoosier National forest. It is close to Paoli Peaks Ski area. It is close to a 'town' called Shoals which is home to the "World Famous Jug Rock"--(Yes, there is a sign right before you enter the town telling you all about it...the high school mascot is the Jug Rocks--can you imagine?...no. Don't.)

Anyway, French Lick..there are sulfur springs in the area so it can smell like rotten eggs at times, but you get used to it. Larry Bird was from there. It's a cool place for hikeing, camping, stuff like that. About 45 minutes away in Montgomery there is an Amish resturant which is pretty good. The closest 'big town' is Bedford...or Jasper, depending on which way you are going.

Summing up...are you wanting to go there for a weekend getaway? If so, yes, it's cool. Is there a job there? If they are paying you ALOT...you'd have to go see for yourself.

Is this in reference to the new casino that is going to open soon there? Hear that they were currently looking for a lot of people to staff it (hear that they were recruiting and hiring now)...

Yeah, they're hiring for just about everything. The resort/casino is undergoing renovations/restorations/additions right now. I imagine it is going to be a fairly posh resort when it's done. We personally have never been there, but my parents raved about the tranquility they experienced while there (although who knows what that will be like once the casino opens). Just remember, if you go for a job, don't work and play in the same sandpit. There's many people in Vegas that lose the shirts off their back because they don't follow this rule and end up owing more than they make to their employer. Additionally, get one of those topless waitresses jobs. They get loads of tips from customers. :)

Yeah, I agree if you're looking to work there, look for a LOT of $$. It's a nice place, for a small town i think, or to living in the country because there is still some country there (or at least there was) but it's ages away from anywhere. I remember it as about 2 hours from indy, and the French Lick Springs Resort/Hotel is nice at first glance. But if you look too close you see peeling paint, cracked tile and don't go in the winter because that tiny little heater can't keep that big room warm. The spa part was sweet and reasonably priced but again don't look too closely or you see the peeling paint, cracked tile, etc.

The old resort hotel is undergoing renovation. It used to be a big big draw for the movers and shakers back at the turn of the century, so much so I believe that the train ran from chi-town to the town. Not so much any more. It's nice for a weekend hotel stay but I what's there to do was hidden away when we were there....

Also there is the French Lick Winery. Fairly good wine, the usual free taste-testing. :)
