Mar. 17th, 2004 10:20 amSo, two DVDs came out yesterday, both of which I have a BIG interest in.
The first is the one I'm disappointed in. The Last Unicorn came out on DVD, in a FULLSCREEN version. Ugh. Now, you can get a German edition that is Widescreen, with a good stereo mix, but we get the shaft over here, and who knows why.
It's been a long time since I watched that movie...tho, I have the soundtrack, and listen to it now and then...one of my memories, from way back, is seeing this movie on cable..it wasn't like your standard animation kiddie fare...there was actual thought to the story here...out of "cartoons" that I watched ages ago, Last Unicorn and Watership Down are among the ones that get a deep kick out of me today. I picked up WD when it came out, in Widescreen, on DVD...and now, Last Unicorn is out, but not in the best it could be. I would love to see what this looked like on the Big Screen...and, the songs...
I've yet to read the book...I own it, I've just never read it. And, shopping for the movie, when it was re-released in the late 90s, always brings a memory of my friend Max. We were both there, looking for the movie to buy for Echo for her Bday (I think it was Bday)...there were two copies...I got one for Echo, and Max and I debated on who got the other one, me or him. I walked away with it..can't recall how we came to that decision. Of course, since I own it on VHS, there is no explanation, really, for why I haven't watched it in the last few years...except that my VHS collection is still staggering, and I can never quite make up my mind what to watch, VHS wise...maybe I should pull that one out soon. Of course, there are a few others that have made it to DVD that are in my VHS collection, that I should replace sometime...Continental Divide, which was one of Belushi's last...of course, the Indiana Jones trilogy...I truly, truly doubt I'll ever see a DVD of the old "Jack and the Beanstalk" animated musical that haunted me in the early 80s. Hell, I think a soundtrack to that one would be fun, in a "haunting creepy things of childhood" way. And, I've looked for that one. Hell, you can barely find information on that one.
Anyways, back to Last Unicorn...if I ever get a Multi-Region DVD player, that will be one of the first ones I get.
The second DVD out this week is a movie called "The Commitments", which is a fun "brit" movie about this guy who decides to start a band...in the musical style of soul. I believe one of the quotes is 'the Irish are the blacks of Europes' or some such. :-) One that has GREAT music. Remakes of some great soul tunes...it's one that a lot of people I know would enjoy.
And, wow...only in my world could I connect "Last Unicorn" and "The Commitments". :-)

Date: 2004-03-18 12:27 pm (UTC)I've got the VHS (From the same release time as you), and have been ever so tempted to just toss it in recently...
IS there any animation coming out that even compares to this or Watership Down? I can't htink of any. Altho, I AM very hopeful that the Live Action Unicorn movie is going to be good....
