My Trek friends will want to check this out, though I'm sure they've already heard of it.
In short, they are going to release the episodes, with NEW Special Effects.
I'm curious, and what's even more interesting, I remember seeing a redone "Doomsday Device" episode, well, a few clips as a "This is what we can do with the technology", about 8 or 9 years ago. I've still got them saved to a disc, as they were neat.
So, post what you think, if it'll be any good, if it's blasphemy, or whatever you think. And, if they do this with the original series, are updated FX for the first few movies in line too?

RTFM Per.
This guy IS NOT involved in the redo of special effects for the series, however, he did his own playing around to show what could be done. Still, the question remains, what do you think, and is it blasphemous? :-)

Date: 2006-09-03 08:26 am (UTC)A little sad. Yes.
Lets face it. Some of the episodes were brillantly made in the first place. Some weren't. Even the ones that were heavier in special effects, Doomsday Machine being on the top of the list, were good.
And the ones that I don't think of as effect driven, they probably had effects that could be digitized and spiffied up, but they did fine and still do.
Miri. The Squire of Gothos. I, Mudd. A Piece of the Action.
Let That Be Your Last Battlefield. Just some face and body paint and suddenly you have a poinant socio-political message.
Journey to Babel was nothing more than costuming, and it still worked.
The Changeling. The Trouble with Tribbles. Mirror, Mirror. Everyone remembers these episodes fondly even though they were badly done. Even when it was just a ball of fake fur or a bad goatee, they were fine.
Yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing better effects on The Gamesters of Triskelion, The Empath, Metamorphosis, The Devil in the Dark, The City on the Edge of Forever, and a handful of others. But at the same time, I grew up in a generation of high quality effects and I still appreciate the horta. The Empathy was one of my favorite darkhorse episodes.
I'd like to think the next generation of geeks can reach out and find these episodes too, without needing the flash of a better looking Nomad or a more convincing Guardian of Forever.
And maybe I'm standing in the way of progress, but even so, right now, it ain't broke. Why fix it?

Date: 2006-09-03 02:31 pm (UTC)I'm curious, as for Empire Strikes back, one of the things I thought was most neat was the little addition of windows at Cloud City. Now, Luke screaming like a pansy falling down the shaft, after he'd made the decision to do that, negated the earlier feel.
I think I can see having both a "This is the original way Star Trek looked", and "This is how we can streamline it to make it look like the other series". I'm torn on whether that will be good or bad until it comes out.
