Sep. 19th, 2006 10:50 amFor the record, and many, MANY of you should already know this.
If you EVER get a message, e-mail, IM, or any crap like that that says "Click Here", or "Your account is at risk", or "Spam e-mails are coming from your address. Click here to resolve", or ANYTHING like that, Delete Them IMMEDIATELY. Don't click the link out of curiousity, don't forward it to your overworked IT staff, just save yourself the time, and delete it.
If you open it, don't expect your IT staff to go "Oh, that's fine, these types of mails have been going around forever, and it's perfectly acceptable for you to have opened it, sent it to the whole company, and crushed the mail servers. I'm sure that you're the only person who'll open it, so it won't keep self-replicating". And, as is always apropos with IT staff, don't keep telling them how stupid you are, that you don't understand the computers, and you guess that makes you dumb, or that these type of things aren't your problem, that's what the IT staff is for. The typical response from IT will vary. If you have a GOOD tech, that likes to make people feel "Warm and Fuzzy", they'll somehow make you think that it's ok that you've never stepped out of your box to understand a technology that is supposed to make your life easier, if you'll learn how to use it. If you roll the dice and get a tech-focused technician, you'll probably note either in tone of voice or appearance, the rolling of the eyes, the heavy sigh, or any other number of things.
Now, if I could find the authors of Virii, Worms, Bots, and all sorts of other crap, string them up from the highest building I could find, then go through their wallet, take their money, and use if to the cause of good, well, that would make my day interesting. As opposed to painful and arduous.
Anyone care to guess what's happening in MY world today? :-P
