(no subject)
Sep. 29th, 2006 01:14 pmIt always amazes me. One of the helpdesk leads is talking of going to the Ren Faire this weekend (The same one I'm going to), and another guy had only ever heard a little about Ren Faires, and was confusing some of his information with the SCA. He asked about Wars, if you have to be in garb to go to such things.
Told him that it varied, from person to person. Personally, I have no ren appropriate clothing, though that may change, as I plan on buying at least SOMETHING from Bruised Plum. :-P
So, found the Wiki entries for both, sent them to him,and sent him a link on the Fishers Ren Faire. He said he needs to get out of his hole of just working, and going home, so who knows, maybe he'll be up there.
In other news, I need to quit reading the news again. "The House authorizes Torture", and "The Guy who killed those girls in Colorado MAY have been using Myspace to target them", and "Rogue Squirrels attacking people in California". *shakes head* Reboot Congress, and then step back and realize that the guy in Colorado? was living out of his CAR. That's like the latest lawsuit coming out against GTA, saying this kid who played obsessively, then killed people, OBVIOUSLY the game designers should have known that their game would cause these things to happen.
Maybe I'm just too fucking cynical anymore, I mean, I remember the first lawsuit against, was it Doom? Doom or Quake, I think, and that was linked to the kid in Tennessee who went on a "shooting rampage". Forgive me if I have gotten some details wrong, as that was a LONG time ago. Or, you want a better one, Saying that Catcher in the Rye is the reason that Chapman shot Lennon. Or that kids who listen to Metallica all the time and then kill themselves, it's the music's fault. As Bob Goldthwait would say, never mind the fact that the mother of the kid was addicted to Heroin..
Argh. Just Argh. What is this mentality to blame the makers of entertainment for your kids flaws? Paraphrasing from Olivier to Hoffman, "Try PARENTING". There's a real disconnect anymore, on people trying to be "friends" with their kids, and ok, yeah, you don't want the kid growing up hating you, but for PLG's sake, there has to be a line. The kid acting like a fucking demon and being warned, then warned, then warned some more is not going to teach the kid a thing, except that there is no consequence. And don't try the "I'm just a bad parent" excuse. I'm sorry, whether you are or not, that's irrelevant. The point is, you are a parent, you are responsible, for at least 18 years, if not the rest of your life, for another life in this world. Don't belittle your task, your duty, or the fact that you are shaping someone else's mind. I never took a gun to school, never thought of hiring someone to kill classmates, never blamed Rock and Roll on any of my problems (Or Primus, Anthrax, Poison, or any of those bands), and it's because my parents actually gave a damn, and though raising me was quite the fun task at times, they did it.
Am I the best person in the world due to this? Far from. However, I do know that I'm nowhere near as bad as some, but not as good as others. Middle of the road. There are people with a lot worse problems than me, there are people with a lot of other things that I don't have yet.
Not quite sure where I was going with that. :-P Ah well.
And of course, the helpdesk just started talking a few minutes ago about game violence (One tech has a "I see fragged people" T-shirt on today). Such an interesting place.
