In other news? Dinner last night was good, good food, great conversation, and a good location, too. I recommend anyone who hasn't been to go to Music Mill sometime. Concert last night was really good. And gave me yet another idea for where to intern in the future.
Stopped at a comic shop beforehand, and a friend who works there allowed me to look at the preview copy of Ellis' relaunch of the New Universe, entitled "newuniversal".
Damnit. Warren Ellis, and one of my favorite concepts from comics in the 80's. (Hence the new icon).
Ok. Comic geeking, but as I realize that this comic book will be endlessly compared to "Heroes", I may as well.
The New Universe was a comic "imprint" launched in 1986. The idea, initially, was the world just outside your window. Then something happens, a White Event, where the skies turn white, and all of a sudden, people start developing superpowers. And try to figure out how, why, revile them, adore them. The whole gamut of reaction.
As a whole, the line was a mixed bag. There were some really good titles, some ok ones, and some horribly sucky ones. I could go on for a good while on my favorites, but right now, I'm just curious what they will do with this relaunch.
So, now to finish the paper due, and prepare to go out gaming with some people tonite.
Anyone who gives a damn, or is just curious, can read about the New Universe here.

I remember reading Jim Shooter's side of the story of how those days went down, that since New U was his baby its failure made it easier for Marvel to fire him. The alleged problem of the Bullpen leaving him out to dry does explain how a concept with so much promise went down the tubes into oblivion so fast.

As far as core concepts, adored DP7, Psi-Force, Starbrand..didn't get into Justice til they revealed that the previous 15 issues or so had been a "dream", and then loved Peter David's work on it. I also REALLY liked Nightmask. The whole concept of dream-walkers was big to me, years before Sandman (hell, maybe it was jumpstarted thanks to Dreamscape).
Always wanted to see the concept win, and wonder now and then, when reading comics, just what happened after the "32 issue limited run".
Eh, Shooter's side is interesting, but I also have seen several of his comic companies fold. I'd imagine it's a lot of "The truth is in the middle". I think the concept went down the tubes due to a bit of non-explanation/communication between them all. The core concept was fairly sound, the ones that didn't go in with it were just odd. Justice is a great example of that.
As "The Draft" and "The War" started to go towards an epic ending, I was kinda glad with how they did it all.
