I volunteer.
At the COJ meeting this last weekend, I volunteered to write the play for next year.
Now, the fun is how it came about. For YEARS I've had a play idea that a friend and I worked out some basics for..well, that one doesn't fit for next year quite that well. Then we got to talking that two of the BEST plays that our convention has done, I directed.
Kick ass scripts, but still, I did a good job of putting them on.
Well, one of the plays I directed (the first) had a great cast, a great hook, and great script, and other such. LOTS of people loved it. And, thanks to Royalcrow, I've got it on DVD.
The end of the play had the lead character basically activating a warp drive on his back, and disappearing.
The hook is that the character appears in Callahan's place. A little worse for wear, but still alive. And then to tell a Callahan's story, with this newcomer.
No idea how the rest of it will come, just yet, but I'm a fan of Callahan's, and the bigger kick is that as of RIGHT now, the author will be there.
I am amazingly looking forward to this. It will drive me just a little bit insane, but I think it'll be fun, others seem to love the idea, and it gets me back involved in one of the things I've missed most...drama. Not the "OMG Life is insane" drama that is sometimes my online existence, but actually putting a play together, trying to make it fun, and drawing like minded individuals along.
Several friends on this LJ were involved in that little play, back in 2001 (holy crap that seems forever ago..at least 3 lifetimes..). I figured a few at least might be amused to know that the play then is springboarding the play for next year.
I've already gotten a tacit ok from an actor in that play that yes, if the script is good, he's interested.
And yes, I'll need help. :-)

Date: 2008-06-09 02:17 am (UTC)I think it was a "mean" idea that he would have died while hitting jupiter...and fortunately, the idea was in the play that the star drive was behaving "erratically". :-)
Though, one of the ideas in brainstorm that it might be fun to play a few clips of that to do a setup, then have him pop into Callahan's and exhale and take a DEEP breath. ;-)

Date: 2008-06-10 02:12 am (UTC)That was a fun "last hurrah" for me and the acting biz.
That crowd kept me sane during my time there, and my memories of all of you (RPG sessions, get-togethers, all that) are about the only fond memories I have from my time in that part of the world.
I just wish I had done a better job of expressing those sentiments back then.

Date: 2008-06-10 02:31 am (UTC)We had a lot of fun with you, hence if you're ever back this way, you should let a few of us know so we can do dinner...hopefully, at some nice ethnic place. I'm glad that we all contributed to some of the only fond memories you have of here. You contributed to quite a few of ours as well.
You passed it along at the time, but such things are usually brushed off at the time, and only truly recognized later.
I will get you a copy of the DVD as well. Hell, I should just make a copy for all who were in the cast. :-)
