Well, neat things you notice when you start dieting...

Like, this evening, much like a week ago when I had a steak Pita, I'm realizing that when I eat red meat (Burgers tonite), that it REALLY causes a stomach ache..even with the Foreman grill loaned to me by Sa, it's enough to make me want to swear off meat...Not going THAT extreme yet...as a meatball with pasta seems to cause no problems, but a full burger, or two (Was bad and had two tonite, so that may have had more to do with it), seems to cause issues.

But, if I'm losing weight, that might be helpful. :-P

Veggie - AH The memories

Oh how that brings back memories. I was vegie about 5 years ago - for about 6 months. And yes, after you reduce your intake of red meat - it does effect/affect (could never get that right in school) you in ways you really do not know. I was not totally vegan - did eat cheese, milk, eggs - but no chicken, fish, meat. Not sure if you would say I fell off the wagon, but going through a divorce when you decided to make this lifestyle change really caused me to rethink the whole deal. I was making 50 bucks a week - needed gas, smokes (okay probably did not need the smokes, but hey it was vice that could enjoy with others at the time) I started to have problems with fixing my meals because the cost - lets face it, meat is cheaper - and a bologna sandwich with cheese could be made for about 50cents a sandwich.

The problem is the portions, allow yourself the meat if you want it - but try to stay with one portion, not trying to go back to the other ways. Your body will thank you later.

take care,
tony

I agree with you, portion control is everything. Unfortunately, in America we don't realize this. We always think that bigger is better (which isn't the case in regards to food).

As far as cost goes, my veggie sandwiches are cheaper than my hubbie's meat ones (especially if you watch portions when making it). I can make a grilled cheese sandwich for less than your bologna and cheese sandwich because I'm not paying for the bologna. :) I think though that most people find some type of comfort in the meat becaues that is what they remember eating when growing up.

Come over to the dark side, Per! :)

Seriously, most vegetarians don't have any weight problems. I actually didn't until about 5 years ago, when I started relying more on a quick meal of pasta at night (because I wanted something hot and quick) instead of actually cooking. Now that I'm starting to cook on the weekends and vacuum stuff, I've noticed my weight going down again (well...and the exercise is helping also).

As for the stomach ache, you might want to test different things out. Do chicken and fish most days, and about once a week introduce some type of red meat. Watch how you react to it that day and then go back to the chicken and fish for about a week ago. This way, you can isolate what type of red meat is causing you problems and eliminate if from your diet (or at least only do it every so often if it is something you absolutely love).

Can do... I just need to know what type of veggies you prefer.

Hmmm, I've never noticed a problem with red meat, per se, but I have noticed a problem with grease. I've never used a Foreman grill, so I don't know how that handles grease. However, I've generally found that hamburgers and pizza are the big offenders in this area.

I tend to save red meat for special occassions when I'm dieting. It has more calories, and you can go a long way on poultry and fish.

The Foreman grill drains off the grease...I love mine.

.... vegetarian and you'll see, you don't NEED the meat (but it does taste good). Portion control is the best thing, and cutting out the liquid candy (the soft drinks) helps too. And, of course, exercise can't hurt.

You don't need it, but you do need to be sure you get your protein some other way.

Actually, it's not as difficult as you may think. You can get it from potatos, rice, nuts, wohle wheat bread, soy products, spinach, noodles, peanut butter, tofu, beans, chickpeas, (and for vegetarians) eggs, and milk. Usually in the course of a day I eat something that has protein in it without even thinking about it.
